Janmashtami is the one of the most popular festive in Hindu culture. Religious plays or raaslilas are held to recreate the incidents from the life of Lord Krishna.

The devotees arrange Krishna Janmashtami Mahotsav where sing songs and perform dances to celebrate the occasion. In many places, Krishna’s devotees organize the Dahi Handi. The event is ritualized remembrance of Krishna’s butter-stealing. The festival is celebrated in other parts of the country with the breaking of the Dahi Handi also.

How to do Krishna Janmashtami puja?

Krishna Janmashtami puja vidhi is a celebration of the birth of Lord Krishna. Puja vidhi can be used for Janmashtami by following this-

  • Spread red cloth on Chauki.
  • Put idol of baby Krishna on Chauki over a plate.
  • Lighten earthen lamp also light dhoopsticks.
  • Give panchamrit bath to Lord Krishna.
  • Then give the gangajal bath to Lord Krishna.
  • Wear clothes to Lord Krishna.
  • Give asana to Lord Krishna and offer ornaments.

Now do panchopchar puja. Lighten earthen lamp, dhoopsticks, offer role, raw rice, Makhhan- mishri and other sweets. Take also Basil leaves, Ganga Jal, scent, flowers. Now meditate on Lord Krishna mantra. Baby Krishna is lying down on peepal tree leaf. His body has infinite creations and he is sucking his thumb. Also contemplate on his name mantra, Krishna. Krish means “to attract” na means “parmanand” means the bliss of liberation. Therefore, the meaning of Krishna is who attracts all creatures towards bliss or liberation. “I bow to that Krishna and I pray him to give me full devotion in his lotus feet”.

The muhrat for puja begins on the Ashtami day but on this year 2nd September 2018 at midnight 11:57 P.M. and will continue till 00:43 A.M. duration of muhrat – 45 min. the breaking of fast can be done after this duration. But some people break their fast after the sun rises. Some did when Ashtami tithi end and some did when both Rohini nakshatra or ashtmi tithi ends otherwise they didn’t break their fast.
